Traction Systems

Our Philosophy

When it comes to deciding how to build an application or website, there is a dizzying array of choices. PHP, J2EE, ASP.NET? To Flash or not to Flash? Open source or proprietary? Use a framework or tweak a CMS? There is no one right answer to any of these questions, and sometimes the choices are already made for you.

We support systems on a wide range of platforms, including Microsoft servers and clients, Linux-based servers, and networked environments with Windows, Mac, and Linux systems all working together. Sometimes there is a solution that's only available on Windows systems, and we get that.

But when it comes to developing applications, we focus on building web-based solutions, and we have a particular toolbox for doing it. There are a number of reasons why we believe that web applications are the way to go, and we are not alone in this. We build applications that run on any computer that has a reasonably updated web browser and a network connection. That means that the application itself runs "in the cloud," on a server that must be accessible to the Internet.

When it comes to utilizing your application, we don't require any software installation on your system other than a standard web browser. It's portable. It is easily updated without installing any software on the client. You always have the latest version. It doesn't matter if you're working from your own computer.

Websites

To us, a website is a type of web application. Gone are the days when a company can get away with a simple, static, brochure website. A company's website is increasingly the portal though which all customer interaction happens.

Regardless of the level of integration into your business processes, we believe that a website must meet two fundamental requirements:

  1. You, the content owner, must have the ability to keep the site updated yourself without any interaction with the web designer.

  2. Managing the website must be a learnable skill, with little or no training required.

To that end, all websites we develop are editable from the site itself. That means if you see something that needs to be updated, you can log in and edit it right then and there. Many so-called "Content Management Systems" require you to edit your site from some other management console or interface, possibly running on some other server or site. Traction Systems websites can always be edited right from the site, right on the page you are looking at, whether it's a product on an eCommerce site or a customer testimonial on your front page.
